JOB DETAILS:
Worldveg - Eastern and Southern Africa, located in Arusha, Tanzania, requires an experienced consultant tor a short-term assignment (for about 30 working days during October and November 2018) in Tanzania. The assignment is part of the Bioversity international project ‘Analyzing schools as platforms to improve diets, livelihoods and the environment in four countries in East Africa“ funded by the Australian Center for international Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and may on the basis for a larger project intervention in Tanzanian schools in the near future.

Key responsibilities:
The Consultant will engage in desk-based research. key informant interviews and locus group discussions in Arusha and Babatt related to the following activities and outputs:

  • Understand the current livelihood and food security context: identity sites tor protect intervention; conduct a literature review; collect and analyze existing data in the potential project sites; complement existing data with field investigation expert interviews. Output: report including socio-economic data, farm data, food consumption data.
  • Understand the existing policy framework for school food procurement: review of existing framework; document current meat composition of school meals in the selected locations; assess influencing factors a o plan and deliver nutritious school meals; identity and prioritize nutrient-rich local foods currently available by season . Output reports on national and local policy Frameworks and current school meal program settings.
  • Understand market settings and opportunities tor establishing farm-to-school food networks: identify farmer groups and schools To be included in the project intervention; carry out a comprehensive analysis of the institutional settings in the different locations, current public procurement mechanisms and costing framework capturing fixed recurrent costs incurred at school level. Output: report.

Skills, knowledge and qualifications

  • A PhD in agricultural economics or development studies /alternative nutrition economics research. An MSc with extensive experience may be accepted.
  • Strung experience in conducting key informal 'te I up discussions and desk-based economic analysis.
  • Strong experience in writing reports of high quality
  • Strong communication skills in spoken and written English and Swahili
  • Knowledge c1 the vegetable sector and/or school food procurement is considered a strong asset.

Terms of engagement:
The Consultant is expected to work for a fixed period that will be agreed upon. An attractive professional tee will be paid based on Woridvegs consultant engagement policy. The consultant is not eligible for any allowances or benefits. Income tax and insurance payments will be the responsibility of the consultant. Travel and other field research expenses will be reimbursed based on actual expenses on the basis of travel claims supported by receipts.
