• The Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU) is a collaborative research Unit based at the National Institute for Medical Research campus in Mwanza, Tanzania. The mission of MITU is to contribute to improving health through the development and evaluation of interventions against HIV and other health problems by conducting research, including clinical trials, to the highest international standards; to enhance the capacity to carry out such research in Tanzania and the East African region; and to contribute to the translation of research findings into health policy. MITU is currently collaborating with other international research partners to conduct a cohort study of 500 HIV-infected adults and 500 HIV-negative adults. This five-year program of research aims to understand the relationship between sleep, autonomic nervous system activity and 24-hour blood pressure variability in the cohort. The Unit is now inviting applications from motivated and suitably qualified candidates to fill the following position:

Part-time laboratory technician (50% fte)
• The successful applicant will have a bachelors degree in the laboratory sciences, and at least 2 years’ post- qualification clinical or laboratory experience in research project management.

Specific Responsibilities
• Available to work from 12PM to 5PM every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
• Willing to be on call to work at other times if needed
• To assist the PIs and study coordinators in planning, management and supervision of laboratory operations, ensuring that the program is carried out to the highest international standards
• To collaborate with study staff, PIs, and NIMR laboratory personnel on a daily basis to ensure that sample collection and sample processing is conducted according to the study protocol
• To maintain records of study reagents and supplies needed and available both for field work and at
• NIMR and to organize study supplies needed for weekly field work
• To develop research tools, oversee data entry and management and participate in the analysis
• To develop and regularly update standard operating procedures in accordance with the study protocol
• To train the research assistants and CTC staff on the collection of study samples in accordance with
• Good Clinical Practice (GCP) in the study protocol
• To support optimal documentation and prepare monthly reports of sample collection, processing and storage in accordance with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) in the study protocol
• To oversee all sample processing and to conduct PBMC separation
• To participate in developing the capacity of junior project staff regarding laboratory procedures
• To undertake such other tasks as may reasonably be expected by the PIs and Study Coordinator

Essential Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree in science with a focus on laboratory sciences
• At least 2 years’ post-qualification experience in laboratory research work
• Experience processing peripheral blood mononuclear cells
• Conversance with LIMS and Microsoft Excel for laboratory sample tracking
• Managerial skills including organizing supplies and preparing reports
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Swahili
• Commitment to working as part of a multidisciplinary research team in a multicultural environment
• Certified in GCLP for laboratory work

Desirable qualifications
• Experience in HIV research
• Experience working in health facilities in Tanzania
• Experience working in research institution
• Certified in GCP for the conduct of human research

JOB DETAILS:
The key purpose of this role is to manage the relevant Maintenance Systems, spares management, generation of routine and planned maintenance schedules, provide support to maintenance teams in the execution of maintenance and ensuring relevant Permit-to-Work are in place.

Key outputs and responsibilities:
Maintenance Scheduling

• Using the maintenance planning system, generate the routine maintenance schedules including required Cleaning, Lubrication and Inspections tasks.
• Allocate resources to the schedules and generate works orders where these are indicated.
• Communicate the schedules to Production, Engineering and other support teams and resolve work and resource allocation problems.
• Coordinates maintenance resource allocation.
• Verify that routine maintenance schedules are being completed and that shift teams are completing autonomous maintenance tasks assigned to them.
• Complete all administration and maintenance systems tasks required to support the management of routine maintenance schedules.
• Provide feedback on the efficiency of routine maintenance tasks to the shift and engineering teams, and highlight non-compliance and problems that need to be addressed.

Maintenance System Management
• Where necessary, take part in the commissioning of new maintenance systems, or changes to the current maintenance system.
• Manage the maintenance systems, ensuring operational and data integrity and correct use of the system.
• Plan required maintenance work using the maintenance system, generating the required schedules and associated works orders.
• Generate required maintenance reports, including SAP reports and communicate to key stakeholders.
• Capture required data on the maintenance systems. Data must be verified for accuracy and completeness.
• Conduct analysis on maintenance data to identify failure modes and root causes of maintenance problems, and to identify problems timeously.
• Where analysis of maintenance data indicates a need to carry out work, this information must be communicated to the engineering team and included in the planned maintenance schedules.

Maintenance Planning
• Facilitate and lead the planned maintenance pre-meeting with a focus on required work, problems to be addressed and resource requirements.
• Plan all required work on the planned maintenance schedule. Ad hoc tasks should be included and prioritised and relevant works requests generated.
• Determine resource requirements to complete work and assign tasks to specific resources.
• Interaction with departmental heads to obtain resources necessary for task completion.
• Partake in planned maintenance period in support of the maintenance team, assisting with problem solving, work prioritisation and resource re-allocation.
• Reschedule incomplete work to the next planned maintenance period and capture all required information from the planned maintenance period on the maintenance systems
• Facilitate and lead the maintenance post mortems and document any problems encountered, opportunities identified and lessons learned.

Problem Solving
• Where problems have occurred during routine or planned maintenance activities, apply structured problem solving approach to resolve.
• Where required calls in additional resources to assist in problems solving or escalate to engineer for direction.
• Assist fellow team members to resolve problems on request.
• Take part, as a functional expert, in FFA’s on request.

In addition:
• Ensure maintenance and cleaning day and annual shutdown programs are completed.
• Ensure all required asset care work is carried out and complies with asset care standards.
• Ensure spares needed to support asset care program are available on time and within costs.
• Identify asset care training needs in the Machine Specialist’s as well as in the shift teams and make recommendations.
• Analyse SAP maintenance system to identify recurring problems and make recommendations to enhance the asset care schedules.
• Co-ordinates resource allocation of process artisans and machine specialist on maintenance and cleaning day and annual shutdown.
• Participate as a subject matter expert in asset care problem solving sessions
