Project Description

The **Building an Economically-Sustainable Seed System in Tanzania for Cassava (BEST Cassava)**project is led by MEDA Economic Development Associates (MEDA) and implemented in full collaboration with the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the Tanzania Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries (MALF). The overall objective of the BEST Cassava project is to enable the commercial cassava seed system in Tanzania. Through the commercial seed system, farmers will have timely access to quality-declared, disease-resistant and disease-tolerant varieties in the right quantities and at a price they can afford.
Position summary

The Field Area Facilitators will be responsible for providing technical support of the Building an Economically-Sustainable Seed System in Tanzania for Cassava (BEST Cassava) project and will provide technical input on the implementation of the project in Tanzania in a manner consistent with MEDA’s philosophy and development methodology. The Field Area Facilitators will provide technical support day to day with the Cassava Seed Entrepreneurs in the project area. The Field Area Facilitators will report to the Zonal Project Manager

Key Responsibilities

  • To recruit CSEs at different level of the seed system basing on the recruitment criteria
  • To provide technical and business training as needed to ensure that stem quality is attained and target levels of seed production is achieved.
  • To facilitate registration of CSEs as a seed dealer by the MALF and to ensure that CSEs are inspected by TOSCI or local inspector authorized to conduct inspections on behalf of TOSCI
  • To conduct promotion activities aimed at creating demand of certified seed by farmers
  • To monitor the activities of seed grower to make sure they abide to the certification standards based on seed quality monitoring and QDS (Quality Declared Seed) certification protocol to be applied for cassava seed multipliers
  • Carry out routine data collection to track performance against key performance Indicators and Dissemination of lesson learned from pilot testing to inform best practice.
  • Support the establishment of demonstration and training plots/sites Production and dissemination of training manuals, linking farmers to seed markets and develop market demands)
  • Identify Capacity Need of the Growers associations and develop the capacity building plan to address
  • Knowledge of and experience of working with farmers
  • Good knowledge about improved technologies in cassava Agronomy

Qualifications

  • A Diploma or Bachelors’ degree in a relevant subject e.g. Agronomy, Agriculture general
  • A Minimum of 4 years of professional experience of working with Research, agri-business, marketing and farmer organizations in East Africa.
  • Knowledge & practical experience of Cassava agronomy, Research, Plant protections, Value Chain Development
  • Good command of spoken and written English; knowledge of one or more of the local languages
  • Good communication/social skills; Good familiarity with the area the project/program is situated
