Job Summary: Africa Healthcare Network (“AHN”) is looking for a Biomedical Engineer to join its clinical operations team. AHN is the first dialysis chain across East Africa, providing high-quality, life-saving dialysis at an affordable cost to both the local patient population and patients from neighbouring countries, which do not have centres of their own. AHN brings world-class technical expertise combined with developing world practical operating experience to a region in dire need of quality dialysis treatment. In North America, over 97% of patients requiring treatment for kidney disease receive care; in East Africa, less than 5% receive care. AHN’s goal is to increase access to high quality care at a lower cost to patients, delivered through a sustainable business model. This individual will be primarily working in a clinical setting, with a strong focus on setting up dialysis related equipment in new clinic roll outs.

Need: Next 6 months

The function of a biomedical engineer is to assist the clinical operations team in solving problems related to dialysis and the field of dialysis– the engineer will not assist or take part in any clinical procedures. The engineer will need to be comfortable solving challenging problems, designing solutions and executing solutions primarily around healthcare but also in other engineering related fields.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Develop in depth knowledge on the field of dialysis, particularly the various machines and components needed to build and maintain a dialysis machine
  • Understand the various SOPs around dialysis machines including the consumables needed in a dialysis session
  • Develop in depth knowledge on Reverse Osmosis systems (“RO”), installation of RO machines and maintenance of RO machines
  • Working closely with other medical professionals, such as doctors and therapists – the engineer will not assist or take part in any clinical procedures
  • Training technical or clinical staff on the use of dialysis machines, when to recognize problems with dialysis machines and how to address various low priority problems
  • Think critically and solve complex engineering problems
  • Liaise and maintain relationships with device manufacturers, suppliers and other stakeholders
  • Execute other engineer responsibilities assigned
  • Understand how to use AutoCAD and develop CAD designs
  • Be fully proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint – Effective verbal and written communication skills (English is a requirement)
  • Act in a professional and responsible manner

Requirements

  • BSc in mechanical engineering/ electrical engineer/ biomedical engineering from a recognized university
  • Must be registered by the relevant Engineering Registration Board
  • 1-5 years of experience (experience in healthcare is not necessary but an advantage)
