Description
Willows International Tanzaniaworks to help women to learn and adopt new behavior in seeking and using reproductive health services to meet their reproductive needs. Willows works in well-defined geographic areas and serves women of reproductive age in the area by conducting one-to-one visits to them to provide information, education and counseling to support these women to develop the necessary knowledge and skills that would enable them to seek and obtain the services or supplies needed to meet their reproductive needs. Information, education and counseling services to women are carried out by the Field Educators (FEs) who are from these respective geographic areas and who have successfully completed a comprehensive training program of Willows International.
Willows International has been implementing this program for the past 20 years and now a new cadre of staff will be introduced to the Willows field teams whose primary responsibility will be to provide coaching and mentoring to the FEs in order to improve their performance. Coach/Mentor candidates will be employed upon successfully completing a one-week reproductive health training and aone-week mentorship training program which is aimed to enable them to effectively carry out their responsibilities.
Principal Duties and Activities
The primary responsibility of the Mentor will be to help 8-10 FEs improve their interpersonal communication and counseling skills and build strong, trusting relationships with the women they serve through field-based supportive supervision. Mentors will:
• Work with project management to identify the individual support needs of FEs based on MIS data analyses and direct observation of FEs’ work
• Evaluate individual FE performance through in-field monitoring of provision of supportive counseling, referral, and follow-up services to women served by Willows
• Improve capacities of FEs through on-the-job training and feedback
• Provide counseling to clients who may need counseling beyond FEs’ capacity or responsibility
• Report performance findings and progress to project management, as well as recommend systematic solutions to improve achievement towards FE and project objectives
• Work with project management and individual FEs to set and achieve measurable performance objectives
• Serve as a key resource for FEs regarding the improvement of interpersonal communication, counseling, trust building and conflict resolution
• Routinely review site performance data with project management to monitor programmatic trends, challenges, and individual FE contribution to the findings
• Serve as a key resource for project staff regarding interpersonal communication, counseling, trust building, and conflict resolution and provide training to project staff as needed
• Work with the project site management to develop and support plans of action for individual FEs
• Foster good communication and working relationships within project offices
• Perform other duties assigned by the Country Director or Country Office management staff
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in psychology, public health, counseling, or social services.
• At least 3 years’ experience in community health, counseling and or couching.
• The applicant should be able to demonstratehands on experience in counseling and/or interpersonal communication at the community level.

• Work Environment
This position has a central office located in Arusha, Tanzania, but requires a minimum of 70% of time in-field in the project site areas as directed by the Country Office management.
