JOB DETAILS:
IMA World Health in partnership with the Partnership for Nutrition in Tanzania (PANITA), Development Media International (DMI), and Cornell University is implementing a five year project(from 2015 to 2019/2019) for Addressing Stunting in Tanzania Early (ASTUTE), to improve early childhood development and reduce the prevalence of stunting (low height for age) among Tanzanian children under 5 years old with focus on the first 1000 days of life from conception.
The project is funded by UK aid through DFID in Tanzania and it is being implemented in the 5 regions of Kagera, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Geita and Kigoma in collaboration with Local Government Authorities (LGAs) and other multi-sectoral stakeholders that are supporting implementation of the National Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Action Plan (NMNAP). The project has focused, specifically to
• support interventions to build knowledge, change attitudes, strengthen practices and expand services;
• retrain health facility and community level resource persons to ensure community engagement;
• deliver overall nutrition components and build the capacity of District Nutrition Officers and district trainers; and
• build capacity for planning, programming, budgeting and financial management to sustainably address stunting. Most of the work has taken off and now the project is in its final year.
• IMA invites applications from suitable, qualified and experienced persons to fill the vacant position of Regional Nutrition Officer for the project in Kagera region.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Nutrition Officer will be based in in Kagera region. The candidate is a recognized expert in the nutrition profession and will lead the efforts of addressing stunting in Tanzania early (ASTUTE) in the region,focusing on improving the multi-sectoral response to nutrition at regional, district and community levels; enhancing capacity to support optimal nutrition-relevant care practices and increasing knowledge of community and household decision makers and mothers and care givers of children aged less than 2 years.
The Nutrition Officer will report to and work collaboratively with the Regional Focal Person (who is also the project’s Regional Social Behavior Change and Communication (SBCC)Officer).S/he will also collaborate with government’s regional and district Nutrition Officers (R/DNuOs) and multi-sectoral stakeholders through the regional and council level multi-sectoral nutrition steering nutrition and other forums
SPECIFIC ROLES
• In collaboration with SBCC officer, facilitate the DNuOs to convene district multi-sectoral nutrition committee meetings to develop plans, budgets, clarify roles and targets and advocate for district financing.
• Participate in conducting supportive supervision, monitoring and evaluation of project activities to ensure quality at all implementation levels.
• Collaborate with other UK aid funded projects in Kagera region and other projects/programs working on stunting reduction and other nutrition relevant work in the region
• Prepare regular implementation reports and submit them timely to Regional Nutrition Coordinator through Regional Focal person
• Prepare quarterly and annual reports and share with regional and council level multisectoral nutrition committees on nutrition (R/CMSCN)
• Organize or participate in key nutrition relevant meetings in the region to discuss project activities, identifying challenges and successes and provide solutions to implementation challenges when needed.
• Provide feedback on ASTUTE activities to regional and district authorities on regular basis.
• Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports for Regional Nutrition Coordinator through Regional Focal Person
• Perform any other activities as requested by Regional Focal Person or other higher project/organization authorities.
Specific Skills Required
• Nutrition, public health and basic SBCC skills.
• Counselling & negotiating for behavior change with mothers and child care givers in aspects of, among others, Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Early Childhood Development (ECD), Gender and dietary diversification matters
• Advocacy and training skills.
• Must be a team player.
• Must be a creative and innovative thinker.
• Must possess research, training,documentation, analytical and M and E skills.
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, food science and technology or other relevant discipline with more than three years of experience on work to improve nutrition through multiple interventions and partnerships. A Master’s degree in nutrition, public health, food science will be an added advantage.
