Organizational Setting
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has developed a global Programme “Achieving AFR100 with forest and farm producers” with the support of Germany (BMZ). This Programme aims to provide direct financial and technical support to local communities, including Indigenous Peoples, forest and farm producer organizations and micro, small and medium size enterprises to scale up locally driven restoration action and to create related new or improved value-added business and income opportunities.
Reporting Lines
Under the general supervision of the FAO Representative of the United Republic of Tanzania, the AFR100 Project Assistant (PA) will support the FAO country office to coordinate and implement the project inception process. The PA will work under the direct supervision of the FAO Tanzania Focal Point for the AFR100 project and the overall technical guidance of the NFO AFR100 project backstopping focal points (FLRM and FFF) and the Lead Technical Officer at FAORAF.

Technical Focus
The incumbent will assist the FAO Tanzania AFR 100 Focal Person to coordinate the implementation of the AFR 100 Project in Tanzania. This includes assisting/support for the coordination of landscape biophysical and social economic assessment; development of the Forest Landscape Management Plans, as well as implementing the best forest restoration practices. The overall objective is to strengthen environmental protection and promote sustainable use of natural resources within in Tanzania as well as to support the mainstreaming of innovative standard procedures for sustainable forest management.

Tasks and responsibilities
Specifically, the AFR100 Project Assistant will undertake the following main activities:
• Assist to coordinate the supporting of internal governance of Local Communities (including forest and farm producer organizations – FFPOs)
• Assist to coordinate the assessment and addressing key issues in policy and legal frameworks to empower LCs and FFPOs to undertake FLR and value-addition innovations
• Assist to coordinate for the identification of potential value-added innovation and business opportunities and market demands linked to restoration
• Assist to coordinate for the provision of training, technical assistance, and mentorship to LCs and FFPOs on innovation adoption and business development for restoration-based products/value chains
• Support the establishment and growth of LCs and FFPOs-led businesses contributing to restoration
• Support and assist to coordinate for the assessment of the needs and capacities of LCs (FFPOs) and identifying the modalities for innovation and business incubation services
• Support for the strengthening of innovation and business incubation support services by FFPOs or other organizations and mechanisms
• Support the national planning coordination and facilitation of AFR100 project inception phase, particularly developing an agreed national multiyear work plan and budget
• Support and organize initial knowledge sharing consultation with AFR100 focal point and other relevant key national stakeholders to discuss the project outcomes & it’s strategic “fit” in supporting national/regional AFR100 commitment implementation and to elaborate an initial roadmap for the project inception phase at country level, including collection of required baseline information (AFR100 national pledges, national / subnational action plans, AFR100 stakeholder platforms etc.)
• Support and organize consultations with partners at country level (Governmental institutions, GIZ, WRI, FFPOs) to collect baseline information to identify shortlist of potential landscapes to be targeted in line with set of pre-identified criteria (detailed information in annex named ‘’Recommended criteria for selection of the targeted landscape at country level’’)
• Support for the finalization of the country multiyear work plan and budget by integrating comments collected during the national inception meeting

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
• University degree in Natural Resources Management, Forestry, Environmental Studies, Business Management, Economics, Agriculture Natural Resources Management, or related field
• At least 3 years of experience working in the Forestry sector, or a closely related field with excellent understanding of the United Republic of Tanzania Forestry sector
• Working knowledge of English and Kiswahili is required
• National of the United Republic of Tanzania

Technical/Functional Skills
• At least 3 years of practical experience in capacity development of smallholder forest and farm producer organizations, cooperatives, youth or women groups

• Work experience with FAO or other UN agency will be an added advantage

Selection Criteria
• Working knowledge of policy and legal aspects affecting the sustainable forest management.
• Proven training in Forest Management Plan development.
