JOB DETAILS:
Job Purpose (support to safeguarding team - strategic):
1. Develop the culture, beliefs, understanding and relationships across the organisation, which are necessary for good safeguarding behaviours.
2. Build the capacity of representatives and partners, to understand safeguarding, be able to recognise concerns and respond appropriately, through training and policy implementation.
3. Respond to the growing need for safeguarding advice on specific projects and consortia by acting as safeguarding lead, sharing guidance, developing frameworks, tools, and training.
4. Position Sightsavers as a leader in the field of inclusive safeguarding for children and adults with disabilities.
5. Help to embed safeguarding in all stages of the programme lifecycle, design, monitoring and completion.
6. Strengthen the role of project participants in the creation of safeguarding processes.
7. Advise and support the Safeguarding team on incident management and investigations, to ensure we meet key stakeholder and legal standards.
8. Minimise the risk of harm, exploitation and abuse by our representatives, partners, and programmes.

Principal Accountabilities (operational)
Training and awareness raising:
• Organise and create content for safeguarding training for Sightsavers staff and partners
• Organise and facilitate annual safeguarding training and onboarding for Designated Safeguarding Leads
• Review and update training materials for GOMO, our online training platform, for all staff and trustees
• Manage and maintain an up-to-date record of organisational safeguarding training and completion for staff and partners
• Create content for and publish Safeguarding newsletters for staff

Programme strengthening:
• Develop and implement internal capacity building on safeguarding in partnership with the programme teams and Global Technical Leads for Education, Social Inclusion, Eye Health and Neglected Tropical Diseases.
• Work with relevant internal stakeholders to embed safeguarding in programme monitoring and research.
• Refine approaches to community engagement on safeguarding, where we work.
• Support the growth of Sightsavers safeguarding portfolio of work by providing technical input and content, for expressions of interest, donor reports and bids.
• Work with our network of Designated Safeguarding Leads and Country Offices to provide ad-hoc support, such as training, action plans and partner policy development. Risk Management:
• Support the management of the safeguarding mailbox for Sightsavers.
• Identify safeguarding risks and work with key internal and external stakeholders to minimise any risks of harm, exploitation, and abuse.
• Lead the management of incidents, to ensure effective survivor support and delivery of timely actions and investigations.
• Apply expertise in safeguarding, with reference to the application of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
• Support the Human Resources Team to strengthen our safe recruitment practice of staff and consultants.

Governance and compliance:
• Support Designated Safeguarding Leads in compliance activities to ensure Due Diligence is completed, action plans followed up and policies in place.
• Manage external capacity development with partners, in line with the Due Diligence and safeguarding self-assessment action plans.
• Review and provide feedback on partner safeguarding policies, in line with Sightsavers Minimum Partnership Criteria.
• Update training records and produce reports.
• Support on incident management, analysis and lessons learnt.

Project management:
• Produce quarterly safeguarding newsletters for the organisation, in line with our safeguarding communication plan.
• Develop and manage visual aids on safeguarding, including posters and videos.
• Lead on work with relevant internal stakeholders to design safeguarding evaluation and monitoring tools

Skills and Experience
We are looking for an individual who is
• experienced working in an international development or humanitarian setting, particularly in Africa.
• experienced in running training and an understanding of the increased risks faced by children and adults with disabilities
• experienced in safeguarding investigation or investigation management
• Able to bring a contextual understanding of working on safeguarding and child protection in Africa and provide support to our Designated Safeguarding Leads in Africa
• Fluent in English and able to deliver effective training
• Able to help design and run safeguarding training and action plans with our partners.
• Able to travel internationally for a few short trips per year
