- The Senior Forest Officer may directly supervise FZS field officer(s) and consultants assigned to the project
- The Senior Forest Officer will liaise with village game scouts, village government,
- Close interaction with District Forest and Land Officers, community extension officers, and other collaborating partners for example collaborating NGOs
Introduction
Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) is a reputable international conservation organization whose mission is to protect wilderness areas, conserve key biodiversity and improving communities’ livelihoods through appropriate intervention management actions. FZS has been contributing to conservation efforts in Tanzania since 1950’s.
The Greater Mahale Ecosystem Management Project is one of the projects implemented by FZS in Tanzania. The project aims to enhance ecosystem conservation and management while increasing conservation compatible economic opportunities for local people, thereby protecting the natural habitats and forests of the Greater Mahale Ecosystem. This contains critically endangered populations of chimpanzees, elephant and other large mammals found in the greater Mahale ecosystem. In collaboration with other partners (Districts, TANAPA, other NGO’s) FZS has successfully implemented Village Land Use Plans, Participatory Forest Management amongst participating villages, as well as activities for improving communities’ livelihoods for example through the establishment of microfinance groups, conservation education and beekeeping.
FZS is seeking to recruit a competent and highly motivated Tanzanian national for the position of Senior Forest Officer to be based in Tanganyika and Uvinsa Districts. The Senior Forest Officer will work closely with the FZS Mahale project team and other stakeholders to implement project activities.
Main Duties and Responsibilities will include:
- Initiate, lead and implement Participatory Forest Management in collaboration with Tanganyika and Uvinsa Districts and villagers (CBFM/PFM) as per the Tanzania Forest Act of 2002, which provides a clear legal basis for communities, groups or individuals across mainland Tanzania to own, manage or co-manage forests under a wide range of conditions.
- Development of practical management plans and bylaws for Village Land Forest Reserve (VLFR) and support the implementation of these at the village level.
- Support the establishment and operationalization of Local Authority Forest Reserves and the implementation of activities accordingly.
- Organize lead and plan for capacity building interventions for stakeholders (District officials, village natural resources committees, village forest scouts and others) as required.
- Initiate and support the implementation of wildfire campaigns and education for the community on the impact of fire in natural resource management
- Plan and execute environmental education programmes
- Work in collaboration with village forest scouts to develop village forests patrols
- Organise and supervise the construction and fitting out of building works including ranger posts and office accommodation as required
- Sensitization and implementation of Beekeeping activities in project villages
- To carry out any other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Minimum Required Qualifications and Experiences:
- Minimum of 4 years working experience in participatory forest management, sustainable forestry or conservation and natural resources management related projects
- B.Sc. forestry or related discipline
- Familiarity with current national rural development initiatives, including the national poverty reduction strategy (MKUKUTA) and Participatory Village Land Use Planning
- Willingness to live, work and travel to remote locations
- Experience in writing project reports and management plans for village forests.
- Ability to drive motorbikes, a valid motorbike driving licence is essential
- Good command of spoken and written English
- Good communication and practical management skills are vital
- Excellent coordination skills and good teamwork spirit
- A high level of computer literacy
- Excellent interpersonal and organization skills
Other desired qualifications, experience, skills and attributes
- Familiarity with savings and credit schemes and conservation compatible income generating schemes
- Experience in capacity building of community groups
- Experience in implementing training programmes suitable for rural communities
- Experience in protected areas outreach programmes
- Experience in the supervision of the construction and fitting out of building works
- Ability to live in remote/rural areas

Terms
A competitive salary will be offered based on qualifications and experience. The position will initially be based in Mpanda, Tanganyika District with frequent visits to the field.

An initial contract will be offered for one year, subject to a three-month probation period, with possibility of extension according to availability of project funds and performance.
