JOB DETAILS:
Position Title: Social and Behavior Change (SBC) Advisor
Location: Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
Reports to: Project Director

General summary/purpose
The Social and Behavior Change (SBC) Advisor will use state-of-the-art, evidence-based tools to promote uptake of vector control interventions to reduce malaria in Tanzania. This position will harness the power of communication and use other behavioral science approaches such as behavioral economics and human-centered design to improve Support to Vector Control Activity (SVCA) programs. They will assist in the design, implementation, and monitoring of SVCA SBC materials, mobilization activities, and surveys to track performance. This includes working closely with SVCA staff and implanting partners to ensure successful outcomes.
Travel within Tanzania will be required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Key responsibilities
• Lead in-country technical work independently, including the development of strategies, multimedia communication materials, needs assessments, program planning, and reporting documents
• Lead the design, planning, implementation, and monitoring of SBC programming and activities
• Lead activity, materials, and tools development, review, and pilot testing
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Ministry of Health (MoH), National Malaria Control Program, Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Program, Presidents Office-Regional Administration and Local Government, and other implementing partners
• Train staff on SBC and gender, in collaboration with capacity development team
• Ensure clear and consistent integration of gender analysis insights into work plans and activities, ensuring activities are gender aiming to be transformative.
• Ensure considerations of disability are included in work plans and activities
• Ensure timeliness and high integrity of activity implementation in accordance with the work plan
• Monitor and ensure SBC activities and any challenges are documented and reported on a regular basis
• Generate media briefs, reports, success stories, and other program documentation
• Comply with USAID and Johns Hopkins University processes and regulations
• Stay abreast of malaria technical updates
• Work closely with finance and administrative staff to ensure timely and compliant spending
• Work closely with research staff to routinely review program performance data and initiate adaptations to program management and implementation 
• Maintain frequent, open, ongoing communication with program team members in all locations (country and headquarters offices)
• Ensure the activity is working toward a gender transformative approach to capacity building.
• Conduct field visits to ensure quality, reliability, and consistency of data and seamless flow from the field to central office and onto the Baltimore HQ
• Support the development of quarterly and annual reports
• Perform other programmatic related tasks assigned by the Technical Director
• Supervise staff

Minimum Qualifications (required)
• Flexibility to travel throughout Tanzania as needed for the activity
• Good problem solving and independent thinking skills
• Minimum of eight years of experience in SBC and gender programming
• Completed Secondary Level Education: bachelor’s degree in public health, social sciences, or any numerical science is preferred.
• Experience working in Tanzania
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint)
• Five years' experience working in the malaria field, including insecticide-treated nets
• Deep understanding of Tanzania context
• Excellent writing skills and ability to articulate oral and written technical information clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences in English

Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in public health, social sciences, or other relevant discipline will be an advantage
• Tanzanian citizenship
• Fluency in Swahili

Travel Requirements:
• May require up to 25% travel
