JOB DETAILS:
APOPO is currently seeking an inquisitive and motivated researcher to join our team conducting applied behavioral research relevant to the scent detection abilities of the African Giant Pouched Rat (Cricetomys ansorgei).

About APOPO
APOPO is an award-winning global non-profit organization that applies rat scent detection technology to address global social issues, including training rats to sniff out landmines and tuberculosis (TB). APOPO’s training and research headquarters are situated in partnership with the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro, Tanzania.

About the role
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with APOPO’s training and innovation teams at our headquarters in Morogoro, Tanzania. This role offers opportunities for research related to our ongoing landmine and TB detection operations.

Key responsibilities
• Conduct behavioral research with African giant pouched rats
• Research and develop new scent detection applications
• Support and collaborate with APOPO’s landmine and TB-detection programs
• Prepare and submit scientific manuscripts and grant proposals
• Prepare and submit donor reports and oversee project finances
• Manage and coordinate logistics and operational needs for assigned projects
• Lead and manage a team of junior researchers and animal trainers
• Work closely with the team of trainers and supervisors in Morogoro
• Build local capacity through mentoring and conducting skills training seminars.

The specific research projects will be determined at the start of your deployment, based on organizational needs and your individual strengths and preferences.

Your profile
Candidates should hold a PhD in a related field of science (such as animal behavior psychology, neuroscience, biology, or anthropology) and have experience conducting behavioral research. Keen attention to detail and a solid track record of original scientific research are required. Candidates with prior experience examining learning or discrimination behavior in rodents, animal training, applied knowledge of animal health and welfare, and/or experience supervising and mentoring are strongly encouraged to apply.

It’s an immediate vacancy and while future circumstances are unpredictable, your initial intention should align with a longer-term commitment. We are looking for individuals ready to take on the challenges of an international move and make a meaningful impact. If you have experience living in a resource-limited context and if you consider yourself to be adaptable, eager to learn, and passionate about our mission, we encourage you to apply.

We offer
The comprehensive package for the Behavioral Researcher role includes:
• One-year renewable contract with a competitive salary that commensurates with experience.
• Comprehensive travel insurance coverage.
• Coverage of select travel-related expenses including flights, and assistance with arrival preparations such as VISA application support.
• Provision of housing with basic furnishings. If housing is unfurnished, reimbursement for furnishing expenses up to a reasonable limit as per APOPO policies.
• Internet access is provided at the office along with a fixed monthly telecommunications allowance.
• 30 paid holidays per contractual year and return holiday flights.
• The opportunity to embrace new cultures and languages while working in a multidisciplinary and international team within a dynamic, mission-driven organization that is making a global impact.
