JOB DETAILS:
The Carbon Analyst will provide support to TNC Africa country programs and partners receiving support from the AFCC throughout the carbon project cycle – from early idea generation to implementation. They will use their knowledge in terrestrial carbon cycling science and data analytics to develop carbon impact models and estimates, and monitoring frameworks for carbon projects. They will work with colleagues and partners to develop novel solutions and approaches for the assessments and measurement of the carbon impacts of projects. They will review and evaluate technical carbon accounting aspects of projects and coordinate the relevant internal processes to ensure adherence with TNC’s requirements for carbon projects across the Conservancy. They will make recommendations to the organization and other stakeholders, share relevant knowledge and learnings to drive TNC’s agenda to improve carbon project literacy, increase quality and promote participation in carbon markets in Africa.

Responsibilities and scope
• Works with TNC Africa program staff, partners, and technical consultants to identify and evaluate promising NCS projects across the continent.
• Provide technical advice, analysis, and support to develop NCS carbon credit projects, particularly climate impact modeling, project baseline assessment, project financial models and analysis of regional and global carbon datasets.
• Assists the designs, development and implementation of carbon projects encompassing multiple programs within the Africa region, which may include regular field work and travel to project areas.
• Assists in developing reports, presentations, and assessments on related topics providing technical carbon content.
• Assists in supporting and building capacity on carbon impact accounting and monitoring among TNC field teams and partners.
• Provides strategic analysis and technical input specifically on carbon accounting in support of TNC’s conservation agendas and carbon markets strategy.
• May represent the Conservancy in external events and meetings.
• Manages a complex workload and communications with partners receiving technical AFCC support independently and professionally.
• Makes strategic decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.

minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields, and at least 4 years related experience, or equivalent combination with further education.
• Data analytical skills including GIS and remote sensing skills experience.
• Experience in designing, evaluating, and/or implementing nature-based carbon and other land-based projects.
• Experience with carbon project development cycle and nature-based carbon accounting methodologies, including the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) carbon standard.
• Analytical and communication skills experience to present technical work to a range of audiences.
• Experience in science-led, critical analytical thinking with a thirst for learning.
• Experience working in a fast-paced environment and meet time sensitive deadlines. A team player.
• Interest and drive to become a global leader of carbon accounting and analysis for NCS.
• Good knowledge and understanding of living and working in Africa; strong preference for applicants based in Africa.
• Data management, and database and IT systems solution development
• Statistical analysis utilizing R etc. and other relevant tools, such as Google Earth Engine.
• Deep understanding of the fundamental principles of carbon accounting and application to generate real climate benefit.
• Experience working for a carbon standard, VVB, or carbon project developer welcomed.
• Awareness and understanding of nesting and jurisdictional approaches to nature-based carbon projects.
• Familiarity and knowledge of policy and practices pertaining to the global carbon markets and approaches of NGOs, business, governments within natural climate solutions.
• Strong interpersonal skills and political savvy.
• Ability to work in a multicultural, multidisciplinary matrix context.
