JOB DETAILS:
The expected salary range for this position is $159,550.00 – $199,420.00. This Director of Research will lead the organizational vision for conducting research to improve impact and scale across Compassion’s child development programs, to inform leadership decision-making and marketing platforms, and to influence the sector to uptake research results and findings. He/she will continue to build organizational capacity and systems for research, drive research agendas, and lead research teams and projects to answer the most pressing questions to improve impact and scale.

The director will provide direction through subordinate managers and staff including hiring, discipline, and termination, as well as, coaching, performance management, assigning, checking, and approving work to achieve global strategies and objectives. In addition, he/she will collaborate with other senior leaders and contribute to the development of functional strategy and make decisions based on operational strategy and priorities.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a remote position that can be based in the US or in one of Compassion’s countries. All resumes must be submitted in English.

What will you do?
• Maintain a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ, maintain a courteous, Christ-like attitude in dealing with people within and outside of Compassion, and faithfully uphold Compassion’s ministry in prayer.
• Act as an advocate to raise the awareness of the needs of children. Understands Christ’s mandate to protect children. Commit to and prioritize child protection considerations in all decision-making, tasks and activities across the ministry. Abide by all behavioral expectations in Compassion’s Statement of Commitment to Child Protection and Code of Conduct. Report any concerns of abuse, neglect or exploitation of children through Compassion’s internal reporting process and appropriately support responses to incidents if they occur.
• Uphold and engage in Compassion’s core Cultural Behaviors.
• Facilitate inclusive, participatory and collaborative process to develop annual research agendas to deliver high quality research.
• Lead high performing research teams consisting of a team of managers and qualitative and quantitative specialists to design and develop research projects and deliver on work plans to carry out the research agenda.
• Drive the team in using appropriate and rigorous approaches to generate reliable, timely and meaningful information to stakeholders. This includes stakeholder engagement, development of research questions, literature reviews and country-level contextualization, sample and participant selection, quantitative methodology development, in-depth analysis using the necessary data analysis tools, report writing and presentation to multiple audiences and forums.
• Refine and oversee technical research agenda driving towards improving Compassion’s impact, scale and influence across outcomes that incorporates identifying and filling critical evidence and knowledge needs.
• Support country and regional teams to streamline and carry out high quality data collection for research priorities.
• Strengthen and continuously improve Compassions’ research systems, including standards and support for high quality data collection, data storage, version control, cleaning, coding, analysis, writing and dissemination, including participants and communities involved in research.
• Develop Compassion’s Institutional Review Board and serve as the chair. Support teams to maintain high ethical standards in research.
• Develop and maintain strong partnerships with academic institutions or other external networks or institutions. Represent research internally and externally. Develop effective partnerships for research at country, regional, and global levels that will enhance Compassion’s ability to generate evidence.
• Present, publish and represent Compassion’s research at events and meetings to influence key stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain feedback loops that will facilitate participatory processes at church field partner, National Office, regional, and global levels.
• Cultivate strong relationships and strong collaboration across MERL and other departments within Compassion. Network with senior leaders from other departments that collect information and data (e.g., marketing, auditing and quality assurance, business intelligence, and management) in order to minimize duplication of effort, build cooperation and support the growth of quality information gathering across the organization. Represent Research with senior leaders across the organization.
• Serve as a connector to link strategy, research, and communications, ensuring that research, knowledge, and evidence production is communicated internally and externally through appropriate strategic channels to reach target audience and inform decision making.
• Provide leadership and development to direct reports. Works with staff to foster an environment of professional growth, in alignment with Compassion’s strategies and objectives. Consult with peer management and senior leaders to successfully align departmental resources and priorities across Compassion and drive research excellence.
• Compile or prepare and administer the annual budget and departmental expenses, ensuring accountability for on-time completion of deliverables based on department objectives, KPIs, and other Compassion standards, ensuring compliance with regulatory and board policies.
• Select, manage and develop assigned staff, establishing goals and objectives, coaching and managing performance, including discipline, motivation, and annual reviews. Support continuous learning and development that enhances individual performance and organizational capability.
• Direct subordinate managers and professionals in the presentation of research findings to large audiences in a consumable way to engage non-research staff in research results. Present research findings as well.

What do you bring?
• Ph.D. preferred in field related to international development, humanitarian intervention (e.g., economics, epidemiology, psychology, statistics, or other social science fields). Master’s degree will be considered.
• 10+ years in research and experience in humanitarian or development contexts
• Extensive experience in designing research and managing research team in low resource environments.
• Fluency in translating the use of empirical evidence to support technical teams to know what works best to achieve and influence outcomes.
• Experience developing and driving a research strategy and learning agenda across a large complex organization.
• Strong record of publication and authorship/co-authorship of peer-reviewed articles.
• Strong professional network in humanitarian and development research communities.
• Very strong leadership and management competencies including the ability to bring people from diverse backgrounds along with a stated vision and strategy, and capacity to collaborate and communicate effectively with Compassion’s leadership, technical peers, and colleagues.
• Excellent public speaking and writing skills.
• Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English is required; proficiency in Spanish or French is a plus.
• Travel – must be able to travel up to 25% of normal schedule including international travel. Travelers must follow the vaccination rule of each country they travel to. Some countries require the health record to be uploaded to their system to receive a QR code to present when arriving in immigrations.
