About AI: Founded in 1997, African Initiatives (AI) is an international NGO, based in Bristol, UK. AI works through partners in Africa to challenge social injustice. This project intervention represents the first that African Initiatives is implementing directly with government partners and schools rather than through a local NGO partner; and as such there will be learning about this approach.
About the Job: As part of the Education Programmes Team, this role is responsible for leading the implementation of Year 2 of a project intervention funded by a US-based donor.. .
Overall Accountabilities:
• Effective and efficient management and implementation of project deliverables including budget monitoring and leading on Monitoring; Evaluation; and learning activities.
• Maintain excellent working relationships with local project stakeholders (project school staff and managers, Village-Ward and District government stakeholders, parents’ committees)
• Line management of consultant specialists
• Donor reporting – narrative and budgets.
Specific Responsibilities:
Project Implementation
Responsible for the management and implementation of all project activities. This includes:
• Planning project activities
• Coordination and management of consultants involved in the implementation of project deliverables, ensuring that expected project results, outputs, and outcomes are monitored and met within the project timeframes.
• Budget management and monitoring, ensuring accurate and timely spend as per work plans
• Compliance of donor and AI policy requirements.
• Narrative and financial reporting, consistent with internal and donor reporting requirements, reporting on progress and challenges with achievement of the project’s milestones and results.
MONITORING; EVALUATION; ACCOUNTABILITY AND LEARNING (MEAL)
• Lead on project-specific M&E activities in coordination with the UK-based Education Programme Manager :
• Procure baseline and end-line assessment
• Responsible for regular monitoring data collection, analysis and internal reporting
• Establish beneficiary’s feedback mechanisms: i) solicit, collate and analyse feedback, ii) leads on response/action at the required level in the organisation and/or refers feedback to other relevant stakeholders, iii) communicates the response/action taken, where relevant.
• Actively participate in/contribute to African Initiatives MEL framework; quarterly reflection and learning activities and Education programme planning.
INTERNAL REPORTING AND COMMUNICATION
• Share weekly updates with the UK-based Education PM
• Provide information as required by AI Fundraising and Communications Team
• Cooperate and support any other tasks related to coordination and capacity building as requested by the Education PM.
• Participate in monthly AI-wide staff meeting (by skype)
(CHILD) SAFEGUARDING AND PROTECTION: Lead on identification of potential safeguarding risks and development of mitigation plans Comply with AI’s Child Protection and Safeguarding policy an in relation to the projects: Identify, report and follow up on any safeguarding concerns involving children in project locations (the project targets children who are likely to have faced neglect and/or other child abuses abuse)
SUPERVISION OF TECHNICAL SPECIALIST CONSULTANTS
• Establish and monitor objectives and workplans
• Regular 1:1 meetings
• Follow-up on terms of reference and provide constructive feedback.
REPRESENTATION: As one of only two African Initiatives staff in Tanzania your role will represent AI’s presence in country and as such you may be asked to attend meetings or perform tasks not directly related to the project you are managing (such as meetings with potential new partners; banking requirements; negotiations with local accountants/lawyers).

Person Specification
Essential
• Bachelor’s in Education or related field
• Extensive experience of working within the (formal) education sector in a project management/coordination capacity (preferably in government schools in Tanzania);
• Experience of working with education government stakeholders in Tanzania
• Good contextual knowledge of local community and social/cultural constraints affecting learning outcomes,
• Excellent knowledge and experience in teacher training and development programming, life skills programming and Child Protection and Safeguarding
• Excellent M&E data gathering, analysis and reporting skills linked to the education sector;
• Proved Experience in budget management, and donor reporting,
• Proven experience of line managing staff; technical specialist consultants and/or volunteers.
• Fluency in English – both written and verball
