JOB DETAILS:
IMA world Health is beginning a patient support program for women referred to for cervical cancer from an affiliated screening site. The project is set to last from May 1st 2019 until February 28th 2020. The project will be focused on providing social support to women referred for suspected cervical cancer to Bugando Medical Centre (henceforth referred to as BMC) for treatment. Women will be supported during all phases of treatment, from screening to chemotherapy and radiation. We are seeking someone to aid women during the treatment process at BMC.
IMA invites applications from suitable, qualified and experienced persons to fill the position described below.
POSITION SUMMARY
The patient navigator based in Mwanza will coordinate and supervise the treatment related activities for patients while being treated at BMC. They will not be providing treatment, but will help ensure that patients are scheduled for care, do not miss appointments, and understand the care process including where to go within BMC for treatment and where the hostel is.The patient navigator will keep the local team at BMC informed on patient outcomes, as well as the referring site staff. Moreover, the patient navigator will help with data collection for patients and treatment outcomes..
Specific Roles
• Receive patients at the gate of BMC when referred for the first time
• Show patients where the oncology department is, as well as the pharmacy and other locations they may need to visit
• Inform local referring site that the patient has arrived, as well as BMC team
• Keep both teams (at BMC and referring site) informed on status of all patients
• Help trace patients that miss appointments
• Oversee payment of transportation fees and help coordinate assistance in payment of medical expenses for patients
• Collect data on all patients, and aid in conducting interviews when necessary
Specific Skills Required
• Ability to ensure that tasks are completed in a timely manner while maintaining good rapport with team members.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Strong management skills.
• Strong organization skills
• Ability to implement interpersonal communications.
• Fluency in English and Swahili.
• Demonstrated experience supporting patients during the care-seeking process
Academic Qualifications and Experience
• Nursing or other medical degree
• Experience working with patient populations, preferably women
