JOB DETAILS:
Over the years, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and its partners have been implementing sustainable livelihood support programs alongside their freshwater conservation efforts in Lake Tanganyika. One area of particular focus for TNC's conservation work is Nkasi district, where they are intensifying efforts to protect fish breeding sites (FBS), within the Beach Management Units (BMUS). An extended point of intervention is the network of FBSS within a ward known as Collaborative Fisheries Management Area (CFMA).

While fishing communities may be open to collaborating with the government and other partners in co-managing fisheries resources, the lack of sustainable financial resources for BMU/CFMA management is a major obstacle to achieving co-management goals. Lessons learned from other project villages indicate that BMUS and CFMAS struggle to fulfill their duties due to a lack of a reliable revenue source, resulting in illegal fishing practices that harm fisheries resources.

The Lake Tanganyika Program wishes to contract a vendor for the purpose of mapping out sustainable livelihoods opportunities in Mandakerenge in Kipili ward, Kalangu in Mkinga Ward and Mtakuja in Kirando Ward all of Nkasi District.

The purpose of the consultancy is to enhance the overall well-being of communities in Nkasi District by reducing dependence on unsustainable fishing practices and promoting sustainable livelihood options that contribute to the conservation of the ecosystem and biodiversity within and along the lake basin.
