Position Description
North Mara Gold Mine Limited is seeking to recruit Senior Environment Officer to join and grow their team. You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to operate within our mining assets with our best people teams. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner to achieve targets in accordance with Mine Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures and ensure daily targets are met.
About North Mara
The North Mara gold mine is located in north-west Tanzania in the Tarime district of the Mara region. It is around 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border.
North Mara started commercial production in 2002. The mine is a combined open pit and underground operation from two deposits, Gokona (underground) and Nyabirama (open pit).
Responsibilities
• Plan, coordinate and execute biodiversity conservation, progressive rehabilitation and mine closure activities. This is the key function of this position so a successful candidate should be ready to spend much time of his career on this function
• Prepare and implement an Alien & Invasive Species Management Plan
• Ensure District Mine Closure Committee (DMCC) and National Mine Closure Committee (NMCC) are well engaged on closure related activities progress at North Mara
• Implement Biodiversity Action Plan
• Ensure information on biodiversity and rehabilitation monitoring is well documented, tracked and reported
• Manage concurrent rehab activities at North Mara
• Engage on quarterly and annual closure liability assessments and reduce closure liability progressively
• Maintain inventory of all topsoil stockpile sitewide and conduct closure material balance
• Drive Mine Closure Plan document update as required
• Assist on Mine Closure Plan approval follow-ups with relevant authorities
• Supervise closure related studies such as Pit Lake Modelling /backfill tradeoffs, Geochemical Characterization, Long term Hydrogeological and Draw Down study, Social Closure related studies and others
• Preparation, update and implementation of 1 year and 5-year concurrent rehabilitation plan and report progress on monthly, quarterly and annual basis
• Assist the Mine Plan team on preparation and implementation of 10 years Waste Rock Management plan
• Run site closure pilot studies as required
• Work with Barrick Closure Group to close identified closure related gaps at North Mara
• Work with Community Relation Department and other stakeholders to develop and implement Social Closure Plan document
• Establish and monitor site based concurrent rehabilitation and other closure related KPIs with guidance from Barrick Closure Group Team
• Ensure the community and other stakeholders are engaged as part of mine closure
• Supervise other key projects such as site EIAs and EMP updates
• Work with other relevant departments to ensure conformance of key standards such as GISTM, ICMC, ICMM, RGMP+ and others
• Ensure mine necessary permits are obtained timely
• Ensure accurate reporting of key information such as sustainability related information
• Carry on job closure related training and coaching to junior staff
• Perform any other environmental relevant tasks as assigned but not limited to the following:
• Implementation of the sampling programs and data collection for water quality, air quality, noise & vibration and meteorological
• Collection of data and information for hydrogeological and geochemical studies and monitoring activities
• Conduct daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly water sampling as scheduled
• Proper use of the site environmental laboratory
• Update and transfer monitoring data in appropriate databases and undertake QAQC
• Maintain the site wide chemical register, update the register of expired chemicals
• Maintain site wide water balance up to date
• Conduct hazardous material inspections as scheduled
• Undertake tasks related to other environmental programs at the mine including waste and hazardous material management
• Participate in the implementation of ISO14001 EMS, undertake weekly inspections of departments and contractors and generate relevant reports
• Follow up of environmental actions at the assigned department to ensure continual improvement
• Compile data for the site wide environmental reports – weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual environmental monitoring reports
• Oversee and supervise the activities of vector control
Qualification requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, or Environmental Management, Environmental Chemistry or related field from a reputable University
• Professional registration with NEMC as Environmental Expert (EIA and Auditing) is an added Advantage
• Computer literacy is essential – Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc. The use of GIS and other specialized software’s for environmental management will be an added advantage.
Experience and Competencies needed
• Minimum of 6 years’ experience in environmental management in the extractive industry
• Understanding of the ISO 14001 certified environmental management system
• Experience and ability to work long hours in a remote site environment will be an added advantage
• Should be able to work under minimal supervisor and fast on leaning new technology
