The Centre for Maternal and Newborn Health is recruiting a Technical Officer to be based in Zanzibar to deliver high quality maternal and newborn interventions.
Founded in 1898 and the oldest of its kind in the world, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for teaching and research in tropical diseases. Through the creation of effective links with governments, NGOs, private organisations and global institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, LSTM aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed/resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
The Centre for Maternal & Newborn Health is an active academic unit within LSTM, seeking to improve maternal and newborn health, globally. We have been awarded a contract from UNICEF Tanzania to deliver a package of sustainable, high quality maternal and newborn interventions in the Zanzibar region. The Technical Officer, reporting to the Senior Technical Officer, Tanzania; will work as part of the CMNH team based at LSTM to develop and deliver research, teaching and technical assistance in Maternal and Newborn Health internationally. Working in Zanzibar, the post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team that is based in Tanzania, to implement and evaluate complex interventions to improve Maternal and Newborn Health, specifically related to Antenatal and Postnatal care, Skilled Birth Attendance, Emergency Obstetric Care and Quality of Care. The Technical officer will lead on the planning and implementation of yearly work plans, provide technical assistance to CMNH programmes and support the development, implementation and measurement of MNH interventions. In addition, you will be required to undertake travel as necessary.
To be successful, it is essential that the applicant must have completed MBBS with experience in Obstetrics and Gynecology or midwifery qualification along with good knowledge and understanding of application of medical statistics, current internationally agreed strategies to address SRH and MNH needs as well as qualitative and quantitative research methods. You must have extensive experience of working in Asian and/or African countries, in addition to providing high quality technical assistance including at national or country level and providing high quality expertise in the design and/or implementation of monitoring and evaluation of programmes aimed at improving MNH and/or SRH. Your experience of working with Ministry of Health, Bilateral Donors and UN organizations in a variety of country settings and of leading technical assistance or research teams to successfully bid for programmes through proposal development, then delivery and dissemination is essential.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills will be critical to the successful delivery of the post. In addition, you must be able to work productively and co-operatively as a team leader, develop excellent working relationships with academic and non-academic colleagues and remain sensitive to a variety of cultures.
