JOB DETAILS:
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
To provide up to date and relevant geotechnical design recommendations to optimize short to medium term ore extraction for the assigned underground mine(s). Reflective use of relevant geotechnical data to undertake short to medium term stope and ore development evaluations and resolve mining related geotechnical problems for the assigned underground mine(s). Providing operating sectional leadership by supervising geotechnical data collection programs and ensuring that the collected geotechnical data is up to date and is of relevant quality and coverage for the assigned underground mine(s). Implementing applicable risk management systems to ensure short to medium term safe operation for the assigned underground mine(s).

QUALIFICATIONS:
• An undergraduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Civil Engineering, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE:
• A Minimum of 5 - 8 years of geotechnical or engineering geology experience in underground mining environments.
• The incumbent must have competent knowledge of geotechnical data gathering, analysis, interpretation, modeling, design and quality assurance techniques.
• A good understanding of hydrogeology and ground stability mitigation is essential.

• Thorough understanding and application of Rock Mass Classification systems and data reduction / analysis techniques
• Good understanding of Soil and Rock Testing and Analysis techniques
• Thorough understanding of Geotechnical Risk Management
• Thorough understanding of Underground Mining Methods, Layout and Sequencing techniques
• Thorough understanding of underground rock mass monitoring
• Thorough understanding of Numerical Stress Modeling Applications
• Thorough understanding and application of Ground Support Design techniques
• Thorough understanding Underground Mine Ground Control
• Thorough understanding and application of Backfill Selection and Integration with Mining
• Thorough understanding and application of Backfill Systems
• Thorough understanding and application of Backfill Materials
• Good understanding and application of Hydrogeological Investigations / Dewatering
• Good understanding and application of underground and open pit production drilling and blasting techniques
• Good understanding of the Resources and Reserves determination and reporting processes
• Thorough understanding and application of Investigation techniques for Failures, Incidents and Accidents

MAIN OR KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Supervising Underground Geotechnical Data Collection.
• Ensuring timely collection of underground geotechnical data from various sources.
• Undertaking sufficient data validation to ensure that collected geotechnical data meets the required quality standards and is of sufficient coverage.
• Ensuring geotechnical data is stored into secure databases.

Geotechnical Modelling.
• Undertaking timely analysis and interpretation of all geotechnical data.
• Generating, reconciling and updating 3D geotechnical models of ground conditions.
• Issuing mapping release updates.

Stope and Ore Development Evaluation.
• Coordinate and review geotechnical design and analysis for sub-surface excavations and underground structures.
• Evaluate the rock mechanics of mining areas through the study of models, designs and processes to optimise ore extraction.
• Review annual and LOM plans to advise on the safest mining sequence using numerical modelling.
• Complete performance analysis, using various geotechnical engineering software or otherwise for surface excavations and underground mine structures.

Underground Support and Fall of Ground Risk Mitigation.
• Coordinating the assessment of the risks posed by poor ground conditions and presence of underground workings to the working levels.
• Develop ground support systems using engineered rock mechanic principles
• Generating and timely communication of ground support requirements and safe access controls in the affected areas.
• Monitoring the implementation of the mitigation measures to ensure compliance to required standards.

Underground Excavation Monitoring
• Oversee and review the completion of all geotechnical related statutory monitoring and reporting requirements.
• Oversee and review underground site inspections, ensuring ground control management programmes are in place and maintained in line with geotechnical best practice and standards.
• Cooperate and work effectively with team members as well as other departments to address ground control issues and provide solutions to mitigate risks.

Participating in Geotechnical Review Panels and External Audits
• Prepare all requested data for the assigned underground mine and answer queries that may arise from the data.
• Implementation of the actions for the assigned underground mine(s) within the agreed timeframe

Participating in Management of Geotechnical Budget and Projects
• Assist in the identification, planning, scoping and costing for all Life of Mine critical geotechnical requirements.
• Ensure that approved geotechnical projects within the assigned underground mine(s) are implemented within required scope, timeframes and budget.

Training and Development of Geotechnical Staff.
• Assist in developing, maintaining and implementing training and development plans for subordinate personnel.
• Assist in performing regular performance reviews and aligning coaching and training to close identified gaps

Safety
• Make sure the geotechnical team understand their Safety accountabilities and they are suitable for the work they are tasked to do.
• Ensure that work is planned, adequately resourced and that hazards are identified and controlled.
• Involve colleagues in developing solutions to Safety issues.
• Lead by example and demonstrate the agreed standards for Safety.
• Create an environment of openness, trust, fair treatment and mutual respect.
• Always follow through on Safety improvement actions

Compliance Accountabilities
• Awareness/management of declaration of conflict of interest of direct reports.
• Awareness/management of SOX control accountabilities.
• Awareness/management of Delegation of Authority.
• Awareness/management of reporting (weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual) requirements.
